Factors Affecting Postage Cost
EDDM has a flat rate meaning that all pieces of a campaign will pay the same rate. This flat rate changes based on the EDDM program being used (Retail vs. BMEU vs Nonprofit) and the entry discount a campaign receives.
No other factors such as weight or size of the mailpiece affects the postage rate. EDDM has weight and size requirements however, but as long as the mailpieces fit within those requirements, the postage rate is the same.
Understanding the Three EDDM Postage Rates
Every Door Direct Mail has three different postage rates as seen in the columns in the table above. EDDM Retail, EDDM BMEU, and EDDM Nonprofit.
EDDM Retail Postage Rates
EDDM Retail is the postal program designed for non-professional mailers, such as a local business, who are looking to submit their mailing themselves to a local post office. There is a single, flat-rate for postage with EDDM Retail: $0.247 per piece.
EDDM BMEU Postage Rates
EDDM BMEU (Business Mail Entry Unit) postage rates are $0.242-$0.291 per piece. EDDM BMEU is a postal program generally used by professional mail service providers like us, Print Shoppe, who mail on behalf of their customers.
The range in postage rates for EDDM BMEU depends on where in the mail system an Every Door Direct Mail campaign is entered relative to the final destination. The closer the mail is entered to the final destination, the lower the postage rate is. This is referred to as an entry discount.
Unlike EDDM Retail, EDDM BMEU campaigns can be entered at any Business Mail Entry Unit across the United States no matter where it's destined for. This allows for a larger amount of flexibility.
However, there is a higher postage rate if entering the EDDM campaign into the mailstream far away from it's destination. Hence the range of postage rates. We'll discuss this in more detail later.
Mail service providers can also deliver mail to local post offices (DDU's) as well using the EDDM BMEU program but generally do not due to the added complexity and logistics required to do so outweigh the postage savings.
EDDM Nonprofit Postage Rates
EDDM Nonprofit postage rates range from $0.132-$0.181 per piece and are only available to qualifying nonprofits with nonprofit status with the US Postal Service. Also, you can only access the nonprofit rates through the EDDM BMEU program. In a sense, EDDM Nonprofit rates are a subsegment of EDDM BMEU.
EDDM BMEU & Nonprofit Postage Entry Discounts
EDDM BMEU and Nonprofit postage rates can receive entry discounts. Entry discounts are discounted postage rates that Every Door Direct Mail, as well as other types of bulk mail, receive if the mail is entered into the USPS mailstream more closely to the final destination.
Note: For the sake of brevity, we'll just refer to EDDM BMEU instead of both EDDM BMEU & Nonprofit for the rest of this article.
The Three Types of EDDM Postage Entry Discounts: DNDC, DSCF, and DDU
There are three types of postage entry discounts you can receive for your EDDM BMEU campaign: DNDC, DSCF, and DDU.
Important Note: In the July 2025 USPS Postage Update, the USPS has eliminated the DNDC entry discount for most types of bulk mail including EDDM.
These entry discounts and their names correlate to the types of mail processing facilities in the USPS postal system.
- DNDC – Destination Network Distribution Center. These are the largest, regional mail processing facilities. There are 21 DNDC’s across the US, each serving a large number of zip codes. Our local DNDC is in Dallas, TX.
- DSCF – Destination Sectional Center Facility. These are smaller sorting facilities. There are 350 across the US. We have a DSCF in Austin, TX.
- DDU – Destination Delivery Unit. Everyone knows what these are. Your local post office. There are more than 33,000 of these across the US. Most “standard mail” (another common term for direct mail, bulk mail, and marketing mail) cannot be entered into the mail system at the DDU with the exception of EDDM’s and parcels.

At every DNDC and DSCF, there is a BMEU (business mail entry unit). This usually consists of a warehouse with many truck bays. This is where mail service providers and print service providers enter their bulk mail into the USPS postal system.

If you enter your EDDM BMEU campaign to the DSCF or DDU that services the zip code where your campaign is destined, you will receive the corresponding discount.
EDDM BMEU Postage Cost Breakdown Example
For example, as a full-service Every Door Direct Mail service provider, Print Shoppe prints and mails many EDDM campaigns, big and small, for our clients. Let's say one of our clients, “Wonderful Lawn Care, Inc.”, wants to send an EDDM to the entire 78746 zip code here in Austin, TX.
78746 consists of 28 postal carrier routes, 2499 businesses, and 12161 residences (at the time of this writing) for a total of 14660 mailboxes.

Note: You can opt to exclude businesses from you Every Door Direct Mail campaign however, for this example we are going to include them.
EDDM BMEU Postage Rate: No Entry Discount
If we were to enter the EDDM campaign into the BMEU at the Denver, CO DNDC, you wouldn’t receive any entry discount from the USPS and would pay the highest postage rate of $0.291 per piece.
Total postage cost for the EDDM campaign without an entry discount: $4,266.06
The postcards would have to be transferred from Denver to the local DNDC in Dallas, TX and then to the local DSCF in Austin and finally to the local post office (DDU) in 78746.
EDDM BMEU Postage Rate: DNDC Entry Discount
** Important Update: In the most recent postage price update in July of 2025, the USPS has eliminated DNDC entry discounts. You can still enter mail there but will no longer receive an entry discount.
EDDM BMEU Postage Rate: DSCF Entry Discount
If we were to submit the same EDDM campaign to the BMEU at the local DSCF facility in Austin, TX, the postage rate would be $0.253 per piece.
Total postage cost for EDDM campaign with DSCF discount: $4,266.06 $3,708.92
EDDM BMEU Postage Rate: DDU Entry Discount
If we were to submit the EDDM at the local 78746 post office (DDU), the postage rate would be $0.242 per piece.
Total postage cost for EDDM campaign with DDU discount: $3,708.92 $3,547.72
As you can see, the largest decrease in cost is going from no entry discount to the DSCF discount. You should strive to at least enter your Every Door Direct Mail campaign to the nearest DSCF.
How To Get The Lowest Postage Rate for Your Every Door Direct Mail Campaign
Postage is the largest cost of direct mail generally. Therefore, being strategic about choosing a mail service provider who is local to the final destination is the best way to achieve the entry discounts explained above.
Strive to enter your EDDM campaign as close to the destination as possible to achieve entry discounts. Mail Service providers can help you do this in a couple of ways.
Printing Network
Mail service providers like us have a vast network of print providers throughout the country. This means that we can have you project printed close to where your campaign is ultimately delivered and get you the lowest postage costs.
Drop Shipping
Mail Service Providers can also ship your campaign to the Business Mail Entry Unit closest to your campaigns final destination, unlocking the DSCF entry discount.
Other Considerations
Timeliness
The USPS system can be slow. If you're entering mail far away from the destination, it can take a long time for the mail to get into mailboxes. I've heard of people waiting weeks for their mail to traverse the country in inter-facility transfers.
If timeliness is critical to your campaign make sure you enter your campaign as close to the delivery as possible.
Risk
You might be tempted to utilize the EDDM Retail program but there are too many things that could go wrong if you don't know what you're doing, and the savings are minimal.
With EDDM Retail, if something goes wrong with your campaign, you will ultimately bare the cost. I have fielded far too many phone calls from people who's mailpiece was out of compliance with the USPS regulations and were forced to reprint their entire campaign.
When using a reputable mail service provider like us, Print Shoppe, we ensure that your EDDM mailing meets all the requirements of the USPS and if it doesn't, we take responsibility.
Also, mail and print service providers buy paper at vastly lower prices than your average consumer can. Their equipment and printing costs are much lower. Even with their profit margins, your cost is likely to be less than the price you would pay yourself and you'd avoid a lot of headaches and hassles.

EDDM postage rates can be a complicated subject. The good thing is, if you're working with a great mail service provider like us, Print Shoppe, we can help navigate all of these things for you.
